Fix Credit Report
Posted on February 18, 2009 in the Mortgages category
You may want to buy a car or a home or borrow money for other purposes. You will not be able to do this if you do not have a good credit rating. In this case, you will want to fix your credit report in order to be able to get a loan or credit to buy the things you need.
Check your credit
It is very important to check your credit on a regular basis. Your report may contain information that is not true or someone may have accessed your personal information and possess credit cards in your name.
An account may be in your report that belongs to someone else. This could happen if their name is similar to yours. You may have some negative information due to this, which will lower your credit score. This type of mistake will keep you from getting credit entirely or cause you to have to pay higher interest rates. If this happens, you need to fix your credit report
Keep records of everything
One step that is needed to fix credit report is to document everything. That includes making copies of the reports with the questionable items marked and copies of proof you have in your possession that the charge is false.
Create a special place or file to keep your credit report and any other related information together. Document all phones calls, emails, or any other communication concerning your credit problem. The road to fix your credit report can involve legal issues, so you want to be prepared.
Discuss your problem with the credit bureau
To begin the process and fix your credit report you need to compose a letter to the credit bureau that has false information on your account. Tell them what the problem is and the reason for it. Attach any documents that pertain to the case, including your credit report. Highlight the areas you are questioning in the report. Describe your problem as accurately as you can. Make a copy of the letter and any other papers you are sending. Send it by certified or registered mail to ensure it is received and the time of arrival documented.
You can go to the website of most credit bureaus and make your report about false information but this method is not recommended. You can also do it by phone to avoid giving out sensitive information online, but this is not the best way either. You need to submit your dispute through the mail with proof of delivery requiring a signature. This will ensure you know when they received your information.
Talk to the creditor
It is not enough to contact the credit bureaus when seeking to fix credit report; you also need to talk to the place you owe money to. Talk to their billing department or they may direct your call to another appropriate area to discuss the billing. It is hard to stay calm when talking to someone who has billed you for something you do not owe, but it is very important to present yourself in a professional manner. Nothing will be gained by becoming irate with the person on the phone. Most places will work with you to correct any false billing and resolve the situation.
Wait for the results
Once you’ve done both steps above you’ll have to wait for the results. The credit bureau should provide you with a copy of your credit report for free after the information has been corrected. Make sure you are satisfied. If not, repeat the process.
