I think the railings on my upstairs landing would fail these compliance regulations, they're quite loose and wobbly!

I purchased a house just before they required the spacing in the railing to be four inches max. We have six inch gaps. My two year old is always getting his head stuck!

Here we have balconies that are slowly breaking away. I don´t know how long a concrete building should last but bits and pieces are falling off already. Also there is quite a huge gap between the floor and the vertical piece. The railing is also slowly rusting away. Nothing is talked about how these pieces can be replaced.

After a nasty fall last week, I installed a hand rail to the steps outside my back door. The reason I'd been putting it off for so long was because I couldn't decide on the most asthetically pleasing rail for my purpose. Behold, my neighbor sold their house this week and while cleaning out the garage, they tossed out the most darling period railings that had been on their home many years ago. I was able to adapt the vintage 1930s railing for my own 1930s house and it's both functional and perfectly suited to the style of my home. I just wish they had thrown it out before I had my fall!

My favorite tip was getting reconditioned balastrades and using them. People get hold of some fanststically ornate designs that way.

When I was little, we were at a friend of my dad's house and the stairway had no balaustrade just a floating handrail. I fell through it on my head, and was in a coma for about 2 days. These things might seem like little regulations but they seriously might save someone's life!
