I think Barbara Houston's idea of incorporating a class on finances and credit in highschool is a good and interesting one. As a recent grad from college, I wish that I would have had a class or at least available information on credit. I don't have bad credit, but essentially NO credit. I think that it is important for people to start building credit at a young age, because when you hit the age of 23 ro 24 and want to buy a car or buy your first home you need credit to do it. I have faced dificulties myself that could have been easily avoided even if I had gotten a credit card that I paid off every month or gotten a loan with a co-signer for my car rather than keeping it under my partent's name. No credit may not be AS bad as BAD credit, but it certainly makes things difficult. People should be educated on ways of building, and hurting, your credit from a younger age.

It appears that the value of a good credit score is not appreciated by many people until they try to either purchase a home, lease an apartment, or refinance their home. Would it be a good idea to include a class on finances, including the importance of a good credit score, in our high school curriculum? It makes a huge difference in the standard of living for those with good scores and those with inferior and bad credit scores.

You need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a mortgage refinance loan. it’s so critical that you don’t become short sighted. Think in terms of more then a few years’ think long term when making a decision on any mortgage.

Thanks for the article. I keep having reason to send more and more people your way. I think that this is a fair assessment. I always tell people you are way better off having good credit (obviously!), but it is not always the case in real life. I think that in a bad credit situation, you really do have much less to lose trying to refinance. A very optimistic look at a bad, sometimes embarrassing situation.

Great article. The other thing to note is that your credit score can fluctuate wildly from day to day. You also need to pull your credit report to figure out why your credit score is what it is as there may be serious errors.

Seems to be a very tricky way of dealing with your existing debt: leding new funds to pay off the old debts. I presume that with locale is meant those people in your direct neighbourhood / relatives. It seems that you really have a problem when you have a troubled credis history. To me it looks like the best way to deal with fortcoming problems is to find new incomesources and pay of your debts.
